Josey and Steve McKain Honoured with PHF's for Outstanding Community Service

Around 50 guests gathered for a special evening celebrating two of Paeroa’s most respected community leaders, Steve and Josey McKain, whose remarkable contribution to sport and volunteer service has enriched the Hauraki district and surrounding communities for more than three decades.

The evening featured a fabulous atmosphere as family, friends, sporting representatives and community members came together to recognise the couple’s tireless commitment to helping others.

Steve and Josey have devoted countless hours to coaching, mentoring and supporting young people through touch rugby, netball, rugby and basketball. Their passion for community sport has helped create opportunities for hundreds of children and families, encouraging teamwork, confidence, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of sport.

Steve has gained widespread recognition as an outstanding coach and mentor, with numerous accolades acknowledging his leadership and contribution to coaching. His knowledge, encouragement and commitment to developing both athletes and fellow coaches have made him a highly valued member of the sporting community.

Josey’s contribution has extended far beyond the sidelines. She has organised teams, supported fundraising, coordinated volunteers and worked tirelessly to ensure children could participate in sport regardless of their financial circumstances. Her compassion and generosity have touched countless families, and even while facing significant health challenges, her commitment to helping others has never wavered.

Together, Steve and Josey have helped raise funds for improved sporting facilities, strengthened community organisations and promoted inclusive opportunities for young people.

A particularly memorable moment came when respectful students from Paeroa College delivered an amazing haka, creating a powerful and fitting tribute to the couple and their contribution to the community.

Their service has been recognised through coaching awards, Local Hero recognition and life memberships. Their enduring legacy is one of leadership, generosity, inclusion and service — inspiring generations of young people and volunteers across the Hauraki community.

🗣️ INDUCTEE ANTHONY DOAK

Rotary Paeroa has welcomed Anthony Doak as its newest member, bringing with him a wealth of experience from a career spanning professional cookery, catering management and education.

Anthony, who is now retired, recently moved to Paeroa to be closer to his children and is looking forward to becoming more involved in the local community.

His working life has been closely connected with the hospitality and catering industries. As a chef and catering manager, Anthony gained extensive experience in the demanding world of food service, where organisation, teamwork and the ability to work under pressure are essential. He later shared that knowledge and experience as a lecturer, helping to prepare others for careers in the hospitality industry.

Anthony says moving to Paeroa has provided an opportunity to enjoy a new chapter of life while being closer to family. Joining Rotary will also give him the chance to meet people, build new friendships and contribute to the community in which he now lives.

Rotary Paeroa President Kelvin Ricketts welcomed Anthony to the club, saying his practical experience, people skills and knowledge of hospitality will be valuable additions to the Rotary team.

“Rotary is about people coming together to make a difference in their community, while enjoying good fellowship along the way,” Kelvin said.

Anthony joins Rotary Paeroa at a time when the club is continuing to grow its membership and strengthen its involvement in projects supporting local schools, community organisations and the wider Paeroa community.

đź“… events, socials, and Vocational Visits

  • Golf Day - Sunday 4 October:

Have you done your bit to encourage family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues to take part?

You do not need to be a scratch golfer – in fact, you don't even need to play 18 holes! Nine holes is absolutely fine.

The important thing is getting people out there, having a great day and supporting Rotary.

    The simple equation is:

More players = more money raised = more support for our community.

And that is what our Golf Day is all about!
